GRE General Test is a computer delivered test. The Grad Record Entry (GRE) scores are accepted by
universities across USA, UK, Canada, and other countries. The GRE test assesses the knowledge
through 3 sections – Analytical Writing, which has one essay, Verbal Reasoning made up of 2
sections, and Quantitative Reasoning made up of 2 sections.The New GRE is an advanced adaptive format. It is a section-level adaptive test. Based on the test
taker’s performance, in Section 1, the difficulty level of questions in Section 2 will change.The essay is scored on a total of 6, and the Quantitative and Verbal sections are scored on 170 each.

When to give GRE ?

- Generally GRE is ideally to be taken during the 2nd or 3rd year of Engineering Study as the students have to put in their applications in their final year in October or by December to be eligible for admission to the Fall term of the following year.
- Several MBA programs have also started accepting GRE scores for admission consideration. MBA applications are very competitive and it is advisable to start the process as early as possible. Applications for the fall intake open as early as 12 months before the start of the program.
A word on preparation.
GRE is challenging. The English section is relatively tougher than the Maths section. English is dense because GRE English is predominantly vocabulary- based and students have to master many tough words. Though Math is manageable, it is the balancing factor especially for engineering students who may find it relatively easy.
Thus, to be able to take up the GRE, preparation for GRE would have to be started at least 4 to 5 months in advance of the test date decided by the aspirant. A sustained vocabulary preparation is essential. The preparation would require time management, stress management, and taking up the computer-adaptive test in actual test environment by solving full length tests.
